About the Code
What is the People In Aid Code?
The People In Aid Code of Good Practice is an internationally recognised management tool that helps agencies enhance the quality of their human resources management.
The Code provides a comprehensive and sector specific framework relevant to organisations of any shape or size. More
A result of international collaboration
The Code is the result of years of international collaboration by a wide range of NGOs, international organisations, public bodies and private sector firms.
As a management framework, it is also an important part of agencies’ efforts to improve standards, accountability and transparency amid the challenges of disaster, conflict and poverty.
The seven principles
Built on the guiding principle that "people are central to the achievement of our mission", the Code comprises seven principles:
- health, safety and security
- learning, training and development
- recruitment and selection
- consultation and communication
- support, management and leadership
- staff policies and practices
- human resources strategy
Benefits of implementing the Code
Implementing the Code makes good business sense – an agency that enhances the quality of their human resources management will increase the effectiveness of their programmes and their overall impact. Organisations that value their staff would generally undertake most of the activities associated with implementing the Code in any case. More
Using the Code
A wide range of agencies currently use the People In Aid Code. Many have decided to ‘implement’ the Code, while others use it on an informal basis or reference it within their human resources management systems.
