Briefing and handover
New team members will arrive with limited or at times incorrect information about the programme and the work they will do.
The single most important source of information will be their predecessor – failure to plan and organise handovers harms programmes.
- One hour at the airport is better than nothing
- One week working together would be ideal as it would allow introductions to partners
- Two weeks would be untold luxury
If a face to face debriefing is not possible, a short written hand over and files left in order is the absolute minimum.
More general briefing can come from:
- Line managers and close colleagues
- Key team members within programming and support sections such as finance, human resources, administration and logistics
Briefing does not have to be elaborate; team members need simply to meet their colleagues and key contacts, and understand how the programme works. A checklist is provided in resources.
Recruitment takes months not weeks – an early start recruiting replacement staff will increase the chances of having a handover
