Briefing and handover

New team members will arrive with limited or at times incorrect information about the programme and the work they will do.

The single most important source of information will be their predecessor – failure to plan and organise handovers harms programmes.

If a face to face debriefing is not possible, a short written hand over and files left in order is the absolute minimum.

Briefing does not have to be elaborate; team members need simply to meet their colleagues and key contacts, and understand how the programme works. A checklist is provided in resources.

Recruitment takes months not weeks – an early start recruiting replacement staff will increase the chances of having a handover
