Failure to meet objectives
There are many reasons why agreed objectives are not met, including:
- unrealistic objectives – nobody could have achieved them!
- wrong objectives – and hopefully the team member took the initiative to aim for better ones
- the wrong person in the job – the fault of the organisation or the person recruited?
- lack of or need for support and resources – an organisational responsibility.
- poor motivation – but what are the causes?
- laziness, negligence or incompetence of the team member
Identifying the actual reason is an important part of the appraisal process.
Only the last reason can justify disciplinary action. The risk however is that no formal action is taken until there is some crisis, and then an attempt is made to terminate the contract of the affected person without due process.
