Range
Your team will include a wide range of people in terms of age, experience, background, expectations, nationality and skills. To complicate matters further they will almost certainly be working under a range of different types of contract.
Consider two extremes:
| Team member A | Team member B.. |
| ... is young and single, and comes from Western Europe. | ... is middle aged, married with children and comes from the affected country |
| ... is a on short term international contract for the initial emergency response which costs the organisation nearly ten times as much as a national colleague | ... has a national contract. She has worked in development projects before and knows the area and people well. |
| ... is only there for a short time, and a long way from family and friends, so she is prepared to work long hours without many days off. | ... has family commitments and security concerns, and as a result she finds it hard to work very long hours, and needs regular days off to look after her family. |
| ... had a liberal upbringing which allows her to speak her mind freely in meetings. | ... comes from a culture where people do not resolve problems in public. |
| ... believes firmly that respect has to be earned. | ... comes from a culture where people are entitled to respect on the basis of their age and position |
| ... is prepared to take risks to get things done and is impatient for results | ... is naturally cautious and has seen the damage that rash decisions can cause |
| ... has previous relief experience and sees this as another exiting and challenging assignment | ... has herself been personally affected by the emergency and is gravely concerned about the future of her community |
| ... already has plans to join her family's business back home, she might extend for a few months but not much longer. | ... is committed to the organisation and hopes for a long term career. |
