Whistle blowing
Team members, colleagues in other organisations, suppliers and others may be aware of illegal or seriously unprofessional conduct within your organisation.
You need to have this information so that you can take action and therefore should respond to genuine reports.
There are risks involved:
- Reports should be in writing but your insistence that they are may discourage people from reporting very serious offences for fear of retribution.
- The information may be incorrect, exaggerated or malicious, so will need to be investigated carefully. The person making the report should be aware that knowingly making a false report is a serious matter.
- The person who reports such activities may face intimidation and worse, so confidentiality and management support are important.
