About our authors

A book review of the above title (The Mobile MBA, Jo Owen : 190 pages

Pearson / Prentice Hall : ISBN 978-0-273-75021-5)

What’s it about?

The title Mobile MBA is a bit of a stretch, it isn’t really that, just a good collection of thoughts and ideas that cover what the author says are “112 skills to take you further, faster.” While it won’t give you a Masters of Business Administration, it does provide a good guide to the management basics: strategy, marketing, finance, human capital. It also delves into a host of management skills: leading, dealing with colleagues, managing yourself and your career.

Who’s it for?

There are a lot of good insights for the beginner or the newly appointed manager to get to grips with – spelled out with clarity.

Why read it?

It isn’t bedtime reading, more of a dip and drop. Ideal for picking up and referring to when you are in doubt as what action to take. Best of all it comes with its own gimmick – access through your smart phone, tablet or computer to 11 training videos (one for each chapter) that provide more insights and advice.

What’s the style?

Clear, concise and a tad preachy in places. Would have been a bit warmer and user-friendly with some personal anecdotes and experiences.

... and the best advice?

Page 148 “Ten Ways of Coping with Bad Stuff” – useful to know for when the bad stuff collides with the fan!

... and the best quote?

“there are some years when I can remember nothing of note : I succeeded only in getting one year closer to death. That is a lost year. Life should be lived with the record button on and in full Technicolor, so make it memorable both inside and outside work.”

... and if only time to read one chapter?

Chapter 8 : Managing Across the Organisation. All about how to get your way – not be a victim of their way.

Relevance to aid organiSations?

Useful if you discard the for-profit leaning. The people stuff may be a little hard-nosed for softer souls to agree with or act on.
